Immigration & Driver Qualifications:

If you are a British Citizen, you do not need a Visa to enter Canada but will do if you travel over the border to the USA. If you qualify for the Visa Waiver Programme, you will be required to fill in a form for each member of your party and pay a small charge of about US$6.00pp in cash.   Please note that you may need to enquire at the US Embassy in London if you have a criminal record, this includes a drinking and driving ban. From October 2005 all UK passports holders will  require machine readable documentation to enter the USA.  Children will also be required to hold their own passport. There have also been recent reports that UK Passports issued to British Subjects have encountered problems when checking in for flights. If you hold a Passport that shows you are a British Subject (not Citizen) officially you require a Visitors Visa and should contact the Canadian High Commission on 0906 861 6644 (Premium rate line)

Minimum driving age is 25 and the maximum 70 and you must provide a valid domestic driving licence.  You are not procluded from driving if you are over 70, but you will need to let us know so we can clear this with the vehicle supplier.  Drivers aged between 21 and 24 may drive the motorhomes on payment of a $7.00 per person per day supplement. Only named persons may drive the motorhome, extra drivers over 25 are permitted at no extra cost.

First night and vehicle hand over and return:

It's always advisable to spend the first night in an airport area hotel from where you will be collected the next day and taken to the supplier's depot, the vehicle explained and the paperwork completed. Hotel prices in Canada start at about £45 for a double room at the Coast Plaza Hotel near  Calgary Airport or the Accent Inn at Vancouver Airport.

Rental depot hours are Monday to Saturday 08.30 to 16.30

Vehicle collection 09.00 to 14.00

Vehicle return 10.00 to 12.00

Rental depots are both about 20 minutes from either airport. For service on Sundays and National Holidays (21 May, 2 July, 6 Aug, 3 Sept, 8 Oct) a charge of £40.00 plus tax applies.

Excess mileage:

Trucks and Van Conversion - 30 cents per km plus tax

Motorhomes - 31 cents per km plus tax

One way rentals:

These are permitted between both cities. A drop off charge applies to all hires unless waived by the supplier Calgary to Vancouver - £295, Vancouver to Calgary - £221 plus tax

Northern Surcharge and other travel restrictions:

Very few RV suppliers do not make a charge for vehicles to be driven in the less accessible parts of Alberta and British Columbia. These are pristine areas with little human settlement and the roads tend not to be sealed. This leads to a far greater chance of paint chips and windscreen damage hence a charge is made to compensate for this. The charge is made if you plan to travel to Alaska, Northwest Territories or the Yukon. It applies if you travel on the Alaska Highway north of Fort St John, Stewart-Cassier Highway north of Meziadin Junction or the MacKenzie Highway north of Peace River, Alberta.

You must advise us in advance if you plan to travel on these roads, the charge is £347.00 plus tax and is pre-payable. The 28ft unit is not permitted to travel north.

Travel is not permitted on the following roads:

Dempster, Laird and Dalton Highways in Canada

Death Valley in California 1st April to 30th September

The renter is held fully responsible for damage and repairs in the event that this rule is not observed. Plus a $1000 penalty will be applied for violation of the contract. The vehicle suppler assumes no responsibility for mechanical repairs or expenses if the vehicle is found to be in a restricted area.

Fuel and propane:

When the vehicle is handed over to you both the fuel and propane tanks will be at least half full. They should be returned this way at the end of the rental.

Remember when you fill your propane tank, it will only be filled to about three quarters full, propane needs a space above the liquid to turn to gas.

Breakdowns and Repairs while on the road:

Any mechanical object can breakdown, not just your motorhome. It can be the taxi to the airport or your hire car. Engines can and do, occasionally let us down. While every effort is made to avoid breakdowns, you must acknowledge the possibility of this happening. It is beyond the control of the Rental Company. Repairs up to $75 do not need authorisation from the rental company. In the event of a more serious breakdown, you must contact the supplier, they will make all reasonable efforts to assist you to obtain help or arrange for repairs subject to the vehicles location and local business hours. You will be asked to sign a waiver holding the supplier harmless from and against any loss of time, transportation costs, inconvenience and loss of food in the vehicle in the event of a breakdown. Providing authorisation has been obtained, repaid costs will be refunded upon production of receipts at the end of the hire. Oil and coolant costs are refundable. Tyre pressure must be correctly maintained. There is no refund for early returns.

Orientation and suitcase storage:

It takes at least an hour to hand over the vehicle, check the inventory and sign the rental agreement. Manuals are provided for all vehicles.  If you are arriving from the UK, this is why you should stay in a hotel for your first night. Once all the instructions and paperwork are completed, you may leave your suitcases with the rental company providing you are not on a one way journey.
